Energy Bill Tax Credits Are Now In Effect
The Energy Policy Act of 2005 was passed and signed by President Bush on August 8, 2005. Among other things, this 1,724 page bill provides for tax credits to individuals and businesses for including energy efficient appliances, materials and designs in new homes and for upgrading existing homes. These credits apply to homes that are "bought or put into service" in 2006 and 2007. In December 2006, Congress extended these tax incentives for newly constructed homes through tax year 2008.
There are several web sites with excellent and up-to-date information relating to the tax credits. Here are two you might find helpful: ENERGY STAR and Residential Energy Services Network.
The tax credits will reduce your tax bill dollar-for-dollar and are available whether or not you itemize. This can mean significant tax savings for a family.
