Solar Home Living

Like a sailboat, a passive solar home depends on nature for much or all of its energy.

Picture in your mind a sailing regatta with sailors and boats competing on the open water. Each of the sails is positioned to optimize the power of the wind. How beautiful and graceful the sails are – each oriented the prevailing wind. And, amazingly, the boats and sailors can actually navigate their vessels in directions opposite to the forces of nature. To be most efficient and to win the race, the captain and the crew must interact by tightening or loosening halyards, trimming sails and adjusting their course with the rudder. Near-Zero Energy Home located in South Sun Estates

The Photovoltaic (PV) System, mounted on the carport, generates electricity used by the home and feeds excess back to the utility company. Called "net metering," in effect, the energy generated runs the electric meter backwards. The solar thermal panels, mounted on the garage roof, heat household water using the sun's energy. Many other features make this home very resource efficient so that the net electric usage approaches ZERO.
