E News Articles: Track It! Utility Tracker
With today’s automatic bank drafts and levelized billing, you may not have a good idea of the amount of electricity or gas you actually use. Now is a great time to review the bills and monitor usage for the next 12 months. Download the PDF form to your computer. By December, you'll have a good idea of how your utilities relate to the seasons and your family's household activities.
In each E News, we'll give you something to look for and think about as you track your bills. This E News edition’s assignment is to pull together your most recent bills. Look at and decipher each amount listed. Some bills are very simple showing "energy charge" (the cost of the gas or electricity you've used) and "customer charge" or "service availability charge" (fees that generally stay the same from month to month no matter how much gas or electricity you use). Other bills are more complicated and show "franchise fees," rates, natural gas cost adjustments, taxes and other special payments. If the bill does not explain each line item, call the utility company or check their web site for an explanation.
Also, it doesn’t hurt to check if your utility company offers any special incentives for energy efficient homes or appliances. Maybe there is a lower rate that you could qualify for either now or when you build your new STITT Home.
